30 April 2017 - Sarah and Michael Graduations and Stephen's birthday

The start of the week was normal but by the end of the week we were back in Provo celebrating Sarah Mickele Gordon's graduation with a Master Degree in Speech Therapy and Communications and Michael Andrew Gordon's graduation in Film Production Management.
Wednesday we fly out in the morning but with delay's we didn't get to Provo until after 10:00. It was very late but nice to be there. We were kindly offered a room at the Treu residence since Br. Treu was out of town and only Sr. Treu was at home. We didn't stay there much since the week was so busy but it was very nice of her to put us up in a spare room.
Thursday was the commencement addresses in the Marriot Center but they didn't start until 5:00 so it was a late day. It was decided to take the graduation pictures early that day so it was over and done with the pictures by all the "special spots" on campus. The weather was breezy and cold. Very cold. The speakers were excellent. President ??? spoke on the word "awful" and how the meaning has changed from many years previously. Originally, it meant to be full of awe and he told the students that he wanted them to be awful in that context. It was an exceptional talk. Then the other speaker was a Baroness from England who has worked with the church in bringing needed services to refugees and the poor around the world. She had some great remarks about the church and the need to do more. It was a very good speech also.

That night Stephen, Kathleen, Michael, Sarah and Michael's brother and sister-in-law and Michael's Father went to Tuscano's for dinner. Since it was the birthday month of both Stephen and Kathleen, they each got a free meal and only had to pay for two meals. It was great! The food was wonderful. Lots of fruits, vegetables and plenty of freshly grilled meats of various kinds. The grilled pineapple was exceptional.

Friday was convocation where the graduates actually walk to the podium and get their degree covers with their names read off. Michael went with Sarah rather than walk in his own convocation so they were at the Smith Field House at 8:00 in the morning. The weather was still chilly but better. Susan, Cory and the two youngest came for the graduation. They stayed with Sarah and Michael. It was fun to gather all together in the  Smith Field House though we were rather late so we found the closest seats that ended up almost behind the podium. It was a good vantage point to see the graduates walking. After some boring speakers the graduates made their way up to the podium in neat lines where their names were read off as they made their way up to the professors who shook their hands, posed for pictures and then directed them off the stage. It was quick after that.
There was a nice reception in the McKay building after the convocation and we snacked on cake and fruit. Then there was a nice walk around campus to get some pictures before everyone decided to make our way back to Jessica and Juan's place.
Saturday morning, we met with Benjamin and Carli at the Richard's building to see the BYU Ballroom Dance Team off on their 3 week tour of Chile and Argentina. It was still cold outside but the sun was bright and sunny.
Ralph family members that met to send of Ben and Carli!
After the send off, family members gathered at a park close to Sarah and Michael's place where the threw balls around for the two dogs, Ellie and Cinder.  Also the kids could play on the equipment and Kathleen received a lesson on her camera.
Hadlie met a friend at the park and then drove her friend around
in her Princess mobile.

Stephen and Kathleen had to fly back to Seattle on Saturday afternoon. Again, it was a long trip with a layover but Stephen had to be back by the 30th to attend his last ward conference. That night before they made it home, Samuel had his first Mormon Prom date. He asked Ashley Bailey to the dance and since she was a  Senior with a driver's permit, she was able to drive to the Issaquah location where about 19 or so stakes held a special prom night with LDS standards. They provided a dinner and dance with the participants dressing in the best.
Sunday was Stephen's birthday but he wasn't around much to celebrate. Happy 59th Birthday, Stephen!
